Position Title: Clinical Research Assistant Positions at Brown Medical School Hospitals
Drs. Jennifer Wolff and Anthony Spirito are hiring several Clinical Research Assistants at Brown Medical School affiliated hospitals (Bradley and Rhode Island Hospitals). Anticipated start date of May/June 2024. Drs. Wolff and Spirito focus on treatment and implementation research focused on suicide prevention in various settings (e.g., inpatient, emergency department, community settings). They work within a group of researchers focusing on child and adolescent mental health, which creates opportunities for collaboration and exposure to various components of clinical psychology. The RAs will work on one or more of the following research projects focusing on youth suicide assessment and intervention.
RISK Study
The RISK Study is a NIMH study that is working to best assess for the risk of suicidal thoughts and behaviors in preteens (8-11 years old). This is a multisite study taking place at Bradley Hospital and Johns Hopkins Hospital. The RISK RA will perform various duties including project management, study recruitment, administration of study assessments with children and parents, and other duties related to research support.
PCORI Safe Steps Study
The Safe Steps Study (also known as Youth Partners in Care for Suicide Prevention) is a PCORI-funded study comparing the effectiveness of two suicide prevention interventions for teens and young adults (13-24 years old) after visiting the Emergency Department (ED). The Safe Steps RA will perform various duties including recruiting participants in the child and adult EDs, conducting baseline and follow-up assessments, and other duties related to research support.
STEP Study
The Skills to Enhance Positivity (STEP) study examines the effectiveness of a positive affect intervention in reducing suicidal behaviors in adolescents using an intervention and treatment as usual comparison. The STEP RA will perform various duties including recruiting adolescent and parent participants, completing baseline psychological assessments, coordinating and conducting follow-up interviews, and other duties related to research support.
Youth Sleep and Mental Health
The Child and Adolescent Sleep and Mental Health COBRE Center is a research center that funds and supports research projects that are studying sleep and child and adolescent mental health. The COBRE RA will work in the Pediatric BioPsychology Core and will support the setup and implementation of new pilot and fully funded junior research projects. The RA will also provide training and consultation for IRB procedures, data collection and management, validated mental health and cognitive assessments, EMR data extraction and analyses, and biospecimen collection/storage/processing.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The general role of the RAs is to perform a variety of duties including project preparations, various recruitment and setup duties, interactions with participants and their families, and other duties necessary to aid and support research projects. The RAs selected for this position will be provided with a significant amount of high-quality training in administering behavioral and psychological assessments and serving as a resource to other researchers. As such, the optimal candidate will be receptive to feedback on their performance throughout the duration of the position. These skills will be invaluable to any candidate who wishes to pursue a career and/or advanced study in a mental health-related field. Due to the nature of the position, the RA will be trusted with a great deal of responsibility for facilitating the ongoing research in accordance with established scientific protocol. It is essential that the RA be comfortable working with and interacting with research participants of all ages and a wide community of fellow researchers. The position requires clinical, interpersonal, and communication skills to handle sensitive topics and professional consultations. Flexibility, conscientiousness, and commitment to the program’s goals and objectives are essential. This position has an expected commitment of 2 years.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
- Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology, Neuroscience, or any of the life sciences
- Minimum 3.0 GPA
- Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, interpersonal skills, and ability to prioritize among multiple tasks
- Experience working in a research project and/or clinical setting
- Experience working with children or adolescents
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE
- Familiarity with data management and electronic data collection programs (e.g. Qualtrics, REDCap)
- Bilingual in English and Spanish
- Administration of standardized assessments of cognition and mental health
