The Department of History of Art and Architecture and the Joukowsky Institute for Archaeology and the Ancient World at Brown University invite applications for a visiting assistant professor position in any field of ancient art, architecture and archaeology. Teaching will be at both the undergraduate and graduate levels; interdisciplinary offerings are desirable.

Candidates must be engaged with a promising and developing research program; the Ph.D. must be in hand by July 2014. Excellence in undergraduate and graduate teaching is essential. The successful candidate will also be expected to take a full part in the academic life and to contribute to the ongoing development of both units. This will be a one-year position with possibility of renewal for a second year, beginning on July 1, 2014.

The Joukowsky Institute for Archaeology and the Ancient World at Brown University invites applications from exceptional junior scholars who have demonstrated a capacity for innovative research and cross-disciplinary thinking.
We seek candidates who best augment or complement the present strengths of the Joukowsky Institute community.  We are particularly interested in individuals working in four spheres: 1) visual culture; 2) archaeologies of gender; 3) public archaeology; 4) the archaeology and art of the ancient Asian world.
In addition to pursuing their research, successful candidates will be expected to teach half time — i.e., one course per semester.  Teaching may be at both the undergraduate and graduate levels; interdisciplinary offerings are desirable.  Applicants must normally have received their Ph.D. from an institution other than Brown within the last five years.  Successful candidates will be expected to make substantive contributions to the ongoing development of the Joukowsky Institute for Archaeology and the Ancient World, such as the organization of reading or working groups, a topical symposium, or another project intended to foster a stimulating intellectual environment in which to pursue research and to develop new interdisciplinary connections.  This will be a one-year position, with the possibility of a one-year renewal, beginning on August 1, 2014.

Hirsch Postdoctoral Associate in Archaeology at Cornell University — Deadline March 3, 2014

Hirsch Postdoctoral Associate in Archaeology

The Cornell Institute of Archaeology and Material Studies (CIAMS)  (http://ciams.cornell.edu/about-ciams/) invites applications for the  Hirsch Postdoctoral Associate in Archaeology starting in Fall 2014. We  invite applications from scholars who have completed the Ph.D. within the last three years with a specialization in archaeology (broadly defined). The position is for one year, with the possibility of renewal for a second year. We especially seek applicants who offer areas of research and teaching complementary to, and not replicating, those of the existing faculty of CIAMS (see http://ciams.cornell.edu/People/), and who would expand current teaching and research topics at Cornell: in particular, applicants who work in Asia, South America, or Africa, and/or with new methods or datasets, would be especially welcome. We seek scholars whose work addresses broader issues beyond their own area. The Hirsch Postdoctoral Associate will teach two undergraduate courses (with potentially an optional graduate section) each year, and will deliver at least one public lecture each year (one of which may form part of the CIAMS, Finger Lakes AIA, or NYSAA lecture series). The balance of the Hirsch Postdoctoral Associate’s time is to be devoted to her/his own research. A faculty mentor will be appointed to assist the Hirsch Postdoctoral Associate with their professional development. The Hirsch Postdoctoral Associate is required to be in residence at Cornell during the semesters of her/his tenure, but is free to conduct fieldwork in the summer or during the winter break if desired. The salary for this position will be $42,000 per year, with benefits, and with up to $2,000 per year available in research funds. In order to receive full consideration, applications and references must be received before March 3, 2014. A decision is expected by April 11, 2014.
Eligibility: Applicants must have received the Ph.D. degree no earlier than April 1, 2011. Applicants who will complete all requirements for the Ph.D. degree (including filing the dissertation) before appointment are eligible to apply. The completion date for the Ph.D. degree will in no circumstances be waived or extended.

Paid Summer Internships at the RISD Museum — Application deadline February 28, 2014

The RISD Museum’s paid summer internship program is open to undergraduate and graduate students; students graduating in the spring of 2014 are also eligible. Applicants should have some background in art history or fields related to the Museum department offering an internship.  The ten-week internships begin on June 2, 2014, and end on August 8, 2014. Interns are expected to spend 20-25 hours a week in the Museum depending on the position.  Participation in the five-hour Wednesday seminar focusing on museums is included in their weekly hours.The goal of the program is to provide an overview of museum functions and in-depth experience working in ancient art, conservation, contemporary art, decorative arts and design, education, marketing,  publication, or works on paper. The internships are designed particularly for those students who have had little professional art museum experience.  Interns will work on departmental projects and learn about the various activities that take place in the Museum, both the public functions and behind-the-scenes operations.  At the end of the program each intern will submit a paper on her/his experience in the Museum and give a brief oral report to Museum staff and invited guests.

Post-doctoral scholar at SUNY Buffalo’s Institute for European and Mediterranean Archaeology (IEMA) — Application deadline February 15, 2014

SUNY Buffalo seeks a post-doctoral scholar (PS) for its interdisciplinary Institute for European and Mediterranean Archaeology (IEMA). During a ten month tenure the PS teaches one graduate seminar (preferably on the topic of the symposium) organizes a symposium and edits a volume which grows out of the symposium. Symposium and publication should reflect IEMA’s focus on post-pleistcene European and Mediterranean anthropological and classical archaeology.
Application letters, vitae,lists of references and three page description of proposed symposium topic including intended invitees, must be received by February 15, 2014 for an August 2014 start (pending final budgetary approval). Mellon Post Doctoral Teaching Fellowships/Lectureships at Columbia University for 2014-16

Three Mellon Post Doctoral Teaching Fellowships/Lectureships will be offered in the Department of Art History and Archaeology at Columbia University for a period of two years beginning July 1, 2014. PhD or equivalent required. The degree must have been awarded in 2013 or 2014 or applicants must have a firm scheduled date of defense on or before May 24, 2014. Specialization may be in any field of art history. In addition to conducting their own research, Fellows teach Art Humanities. In the second year, Fellows have the option of teaching an undergraduate seminar in their own field of specialization in lieu of one semester of Art Humanities.
Awards are for two years, with an annual salary of $52,250.

Two postdocs at the Sonia and Marco Nadler Institute of Archaeology (Tel Aviv University) — Deadline March 2, 2014

The Sonia and Marco Nadler Institute of Archaeology, Tel Aviv University, will appoint two post-doctoral scholars for 2014-2015 in the fields of Archaeology, Ancient Israel Studies, or Ancient Near Eastern Cultures.
The highly competitive fellowships are offered to researchers across many disciplines, and will be awarded on the basis of academic excellence.
Applicants should have received their Ph.D. in a relevant field within the last five years from an institution other than Tel Aviv University. While appropriate training in archaeology, biblical
studies, ancient Near Eastern cultures and/or biblical history is required, the nature of an applicant’s specific research interests and areas of expertise is open.
Successful candidates are expected to make substantive contributions to the ongoing development of the Sonia and Marco Nadler Institute of Archaeology by organizing a colloquium on a subject to be decided at the beginning of the academic year that will stimulate an intellectual environment in which research and new interdisciplinary connections are pursued and developed.
In addition to engaging in their own research, the successful candidates will be expected to teach one two-hour graduate level seminar during one of the two semesters (interdisciplinary offerings are desirable).
The fellowship period will begin October 1, 2014, and is for a period of one academic year. The appointment carries an NIS 85,000 (= approximately $24,000) stipend and teaching salary for each candidate.

American Research Center in Sofia Postdoctoral Fellowship in the Humanities and Social Sciences — Deadline January 15, 2014

POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWSHIP IN THE HUMANITIES AND SOCIAL SCIENCES

The American Research Center in Sofia (www.arcsofia.org) is pleased to announce our 2nd competition for a six-month Postdoctoral Fellowship for scholars currently teaching at an American institution of higher education or independent scholars in the USA, who have received their PhD within the last ten years (2004-2013) and are US citizens or non-citizens with at least three years of residence in the US.

In accordance with the mission of ARCS, the fellowship is open to candidates whose research focuses on any aspect of the Humanities and Social Sciences of Bulgaria and the six other countries we serve from antiquity to the present day. In addition to conducting her/his research based at ARCS, the Postdoctoral Fellow will contribute to the academic program of ARCS by presenting a small number of lectures and seminars and organizing one regional workshop/conference.

The Fellowship will be held for six months within the period September 1, 2014 – August 31, 2015 with a total stipend of $12,000 ($2000 per month); ARCS will reimburse up to $2000 for travel between the US and Bulgaria and research-related travel in the Balkans during the term of the fellowship.

Fellowships 2014-15 – Columbia University Italian Academy — Deadline December 9, 2013

COLUMBIA’S ITALIAN ACADEMY
invites applications for projects in the humanities, sciences, and social sciences. These may be related to all aspects of cultural memory; to research at the intersection of history, ethnography, and anthropology; to the relationship between contemporary and historical cultures; and to the histories of art, music, literature and philosophy.
In the fields of science, technology and engineering, applications that relate to Columbia’s strengths will be welcomed.
Applications dealing with the scientific and technological aspects of culture and memory are also encouraged. Special consideration will be given to proposals in the neurosciences relevant to the Academy’s ongoing project in Art and Neuroscience.
Two Alexander Bodini Research Fellowships are also offered: in Developmental and Adolescent Psychiatry, and in Culture and Religion.
 
Fellowships are open to both US and non-US citizens at the post-doctoral and faculty level.
