Thank you for your interest in radiology research. Given IRB requirements, hospital onboarding, and the publication process, research opportunities require a commitment of at least one semester and most often span several semesters. It is best to reach out well in advance (e.g., contact in the spring for summer opportunities, or at least two months before a research rotation). If you are interested in publishing, please review the ICMJE guidelines for authorship.
There are two types of research opportunities:
1. The first is trainee-initiated research. Medical students, graduate students, residents, and fellows propose their ideas to relevant clinical and research faculty for critical review. After this review, trainees are expected to write initial drafts of the IRB application, grant application (see below, if applicable), and resulting abstracts and manuscripts. Trainees are encouraged to contact faculty directly about these projects.

2. The second is faculty-initiated research. Faculty may have opportunities for trainees to participate in various stages of research. This can include EMR data collection, collecting data from patients or other sources, data cleaning, finding and reading research articles, and helping to edit manuscripts. Depending on a trainee’s educational background and experience, trainees may also do bench research, build and run computational routines, and help write manuscripts. Note, many research projects do not have these opportunities or these opportunities have already been adequately staffed. These research opportunities will be posted here as they become available.
Although you are welcome to contact faculty directly, this website will be a more efficient means of finding information about faculty-initiated research opportunities in radiology at Brown.
