negative effects of climate change

We study the negative health effects of climate change and develop practical solutions that promote healthy aging.

Heat and air pollution

We integrate both existing and emerging climate and aging research into work performed by community organizations that serve populations at heightened risk of adverse health effects from extreme heat and air pollution.

Who We Are

A research team with experts in climate change, disease modeling, environmental health, gerontology, air pollution modeling, atmospheric science, and more.

“Extreme heat, compounded by humidity and particulate air pollution, is particularly hazardous for older adults and those with chronic health conditions. These sensitivities are exacerbated by a range of social determinants of health, such as social isolation, inadequate housing and transportation, and low, fixed incomes. Our center is addressing the scale and scope of these adverse health events with the goal of designing effective interventions.”

Theresa Shireman

Director of the Center for Gerontology and Health Care Research, Professor of Health Services, Policy and Practice, Professor of Epidemiology

“The center’s goal is to build adaptive strategies that improve the resilience of aging populations, locally and nationally, to the effects of climate change. We aim to develop practical solutions that promote healthy aging for all.”

Allan Just

Associate Professor of Public Health and of Environment and Society
