Akash Altman (Campus Life Fellow and Special Assistant to the Vice President for Campus Life, Brown University)

Graduating in the Brown University Class of 2020 with an A.B. in Engineering, Akash began his professional career back at Brown in the heart of the pandemic. Akash is a strong leader and has extensive experience in community building, leadership development, vision building, relationship management, and social justice. He has served the division as the Campus Life Fellow, Brown Center for Students of Color Interim Program Coordinator, and Special Assistant to the Vice President for Campus Life. In his time as a student here at Brown, Akash found community at the Brown Center for Students of Color, South Asian Students Association, Leadership Development Initiative, and serving as a Minority Peer Counselor.

Akash is committed to advancing the needs of students through collaborative dialogue with an emphasis on empathy, equity, and sustainability. As Campus Life Fellow, he generates programs that support Brown undergraduate students in building virtual and remote community and on campus with a particular focus on leadership development, student advocacy, and student engagement. Programs have included the Leadership Development InitiativeCampus Life Student Advisory BoardDisability Justice Student InitiativeJUST Lead (Justice-oriented, Understanding, Supportive, and Transformative Leadership). Additionally, Akash collaborates with staff in the cultural and identity centers on other student-centered programs and initiatives.

Akash believes in the importance of the inclusion of student voice in the work of the University and cares deeply about supporting the holistic student experience. As Special Assistant to the Vice President for Campus Life, he advises the division leadership on current student experience and needs and completes a variety of student-facing special projects. Akash helps the Campus Life team maintain a strong connection and interactive relevance to student culture and needs during a period of time when connections with students on campus, in Providence, and beyond have never been more important.
