Welcome to the Community Health Informatics Data Lab in Africana Studies at Brown University

Our Story

The CHID Lab is committed to interdisciplinarity and broadly researches data and technology in health informatics, specifically AI-driven technologies, to advance health and well-being for communities of African descent in Providence and the larger African diaspora.

Who We Are

The CHID Lab’s work is rooted in the adinkra symbol, the Abe Dua, which symbolizes health as wealth, resourcefulness, and self-sufficiency.

How We Do It

The CHID Lab uses theoretical and practical frameworks in Africana Studies, the digital humanities, data science, critical data studies, and health informatics to transform health information into community-centered knowledge. We also draw on history and contemporary lived experiences to advance community-informed solutions for health and well-being.

Why We Do It

The CHID Lab believes that health and wellbeing for communities is a matter of justice. It is essential for achieving a whole society.
