Congratulations Timea
We are so excited to announce Timea’s First First-Author Publication,“The Precise Synthesis of Ultradense Bottlebrush Polymers Unearths Unique Trends in Lyotropic Ordering” Published in the Journal of the American Chemical Society!
It was no small feat to verify that we had made well-defined polymers with molecular weights exceeding 40 million Daltons! This made possible by collaboration with Tosoh Bioscience – Separation & Purification (specifically Tianyu Li, Ph.D. and David Gillespie), while our liquid crystallinity studies were conducted at the SAXS line at BioPACIFIC MIP (Phillip Kohl and Youli Li).

We are excited to announce the successful dissertation defense of our first visiting scholar, Daniel Keane. The newly minted Dr. Keane has contributed a substantial amount of time and energy to our group not only through his direct scientific contributions but also through his encouragement and mentorship to our new graduate students. We at the McDonald lab are incredibly proud of your accomplishment and privileged to have been a part of your defense. Congratulations!

2nd Years Passed Literature Review!
As of December 3, 2024, all of the McDonald Lab 2nd years (Tommy, Hana and Becca) have passed their respective literature reviews! Our fantastic 2nd years are now preparing for their Research Proposal Defense slotted for the spring of 2025!
From the Graduate Student handbook, “In year 2,
basic science reading, writing, and presentation skills will be developed in the course of writing a literature review of your given research area or topic and delivering an oral seminar to your
committee.”

After our group meeting this week, we celebrated Khang joining the lab with a group dinner at his favorite Vietnamese restaurant. We are very excited for Khang to join our lab!

Timea’s Praiseworthy Poster!
Timea went to the 2024 Fall National ACS meeting to present her Poster “Colloidal Liquid Crystallin Behavior from Bottlebrush Polymers of Unprecedented Grafting Density” and won Best Poster in Polymeric Materials: Science and Engineering! Congratulations Timea for all of your hard work!
First Publications
It has been an exciting journey to our first publications! Congratulations to Filip, Kenna, Aiden and Timea for their first publications in the McDonald Lab! https://sites.brown.edu/mcdonalab/publications/ Filip, Aiden and Kennas paper, “Ion-Specific Interactions Engender Dynamic and Tailorable Properties in Biomimetic Cationic Polyelectrolytes” has been selected as an Angewandte Chemie Hot Paper!
