Mental Health & Adolescence

Mental Health:

  • Is an important part of overall health and well-being
  • Includes emotional, psychological, and social well-being
  • Affects how one thinks, feels, and acts
  • Determines how one handles stress, relates to others, and makes healthy choices
  • Exists on a complex continuum
  • Impacts learning, concentration, school attendance, and academic performance
  • Can be shaped by societal, environmental, community, familial, and individual factors

Approximately one in every four to five children suffers from a mental health disorder that results in severe impairment. According to the World Health Organization, emotional disorders, such as depression and anxiety, are the most common among adolescents , and can have a significant impact on school, relationships, and motivation. This can create a positive feedback loop of declining mental health for children and teens, and contribute to self-harm and thoughts of suicide. It is important to involve adolescents in prevention and intervention programs to stop further decline and improve their mental state.

Mental Health Disorders:

  • Impact one’s thinking, emotions, and mood
  • Interfere with one’s daily functioning at home, school and socially.
