Voices of Water is a collection of songs by Belu-Olisa P. Sarkissian reflecting an exploration of her different voices, faces, fractals/fractures. The theme of water flows throughout this collection—water’s transformative essence and malleability, as well as varying moods, tempers, and rhythms allowing the project to take many forms and distinct voices. Lyrics such as “I swim perpetually in an ocean” reflect more conceptual inquiries into the atmospheric/oceanic quality of our breathable environment and even of sound itself. Water is generally viewed as a body but is made of billions of singular molecules; this investigation of the whole self and all its various fractures and faces is dealt with heavily in this project. Water occurs again and again as a clearing, healing force, filling something empty, or asking questions on what does it mean to undissolve. This project covers a trajectory of looking at one’s different selves, of “staring at all my faces” and finally coming to the process of “undissolving,” of merging these separate parts into a whole once more.
