IRB & confidentiality

Our study was reviewed and approved by Brown University’s Institutional Review Board or IRB. The IRB is an ethical review board that ensures the rights and well-being of people who participate in research are protected. If you have questions about your rights as a research participant, you can contact Brown University’s Human Research Protection Program at 401-863-3050 or email them at IRB@Brown.edu.

Your confidentiality is our highest priority. All information you provide to us as a participant in this study will be stored on secure servers with restricted access. Your name will not appear on any stored files. Only trained and authorized members of the study team will have access to your files.

Do I have to be a patient?

Yes, to participate in our study you must be a patient at one of the participating sites. Currently enrolling sites include: LA LGBT Center, Montefiore Medical Center, and Whitman-Walker Health. Please note that we are no longer recruiting from El Rio Health or Howard Brown Health Center.

Is this study only for people with a drinking problem?

No! We are recruiting participants with a range of drinking habits. Please fill out our eligibility survey here to find out if you qualify.

Do I have to want to change my drinking to participate?

No! As a participant in this study, you may be asked to think about your goals related to your drinking habits. Those goals are custom to you and do not have to be related to changing drinking.

Do I need a smartphone or a computer?

No! If you do not have a smartphone or computer we are able to mail you all study documents and materials (please contact us if you prefer to complete all study procedures via mail).

Will my doctor know that I am participating?

Yes. We let the healthcare teams know who has signed up for our study only. All other information you provide us during the study is kept confidential and will not be given to your doctor.

What if I am already in therapy?

You may still be eligible to participate! Please fill out our survey here to see if you qualify.

What if I am in another study already?
