Advisory Board

Members of the Sciara Stock Center Advisory Board (aka the External Advisory Committee) are Sean Carroll, Thom Kaufman, Matt Scott, Allan Spradling and Bill Sullivan. Drs. Carroll, Scott and Spradling are members of the National Academy of Sciences. Dr. Scott served as President of the Society for Developmental Biology; Drs. Spradling and Kaufman are past Presidents of the Genetics Society of America (GSA). They and Sean Carroll are Investigators of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. As a group, they are all well-known scientists who work with Drosophila and recognize the enormous utility that Sciara offers as a model organism. Sean Carroll is a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Drosophila Species Stock Center and Thom Kaufman is co-Director of the Bloomington Drosophila Stock Center at Indiana University; their special insights from the Drosophila Stock Centers will be invaluable to the Sciara Stock Center and help to forge links between the latter and the former.

Biosketches are listed below for the members of the Scientific Advisory Board for the Sciara Stock Center:

Sean Carroll (carrolls@hhmi.org)
Sean Carroll is the Allan Wilson Professor of Molecular Biology, Genetics, and Medical Genetics at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. He was a Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) investigator from 1990 to 2010. In September 2010, he became HHMI’s Vice President for Science Education. He has received many awards including a Presidential Young Investigator award and the Benjamin Franklin Medal in Life Science from the Franklin Institute. He received the Alexander Kowalevsky medal from the Saint Petersburg Society of Naturalists and was elected as an honorary member of that group. Dr. Carroll is a member of National Academy of Sciences; American Academy of Arts and Sciences; American Association for Advancement of Science.

Thom Kaufman (kaufman@indiana.edu)
Thom Kaufman is the Distinguished Professor of Biology at Indiana University. He has been a constant and dedicated force behind many major Drosophila projects. He is one of the initial founders and designers of FlyBase, the electronic database that organizes data on Drosophila genes, mutations, and other biological features in a comprehensive way. Thom was also instrumental in the development of both the Bloomington Drosophila Stock Center and the Drosophila Genomics Resource Center and is co-director of these resources. Thom played a prominent role in garnering support for the genome projects to sequence multiple Drosophila species, an important initiative that provides a paradigm for comparative genomics. He is past chair of the National Drosophila Board. He served as President of the Genetics Society of America in 1998, having previously been Secretary of that organization (1989-1991). He has received several awards including the Conklin Medal and also the George W. Beadle Medal for outstanding contributions to the genetics research community. Dr. Kaufman is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Matthew Scott (mscott@stanford.edu)
Matt Scott, the Howard H. and Jessie T. Watkins University Professor at Stanford University, served as Associate Chair and Chair of the Department of Developmental Biology for six years. Subsequently, he chaired the multidisciplinary Bio-X program at Stanford from 2001-2007. Dr. Scott was an HHMI Investigator from 1989-2013. He served as President of the Society for Developmental Biology and received their Conklin medal in 2004. Among his other awards, he has received the Passano Award (1990) and the Pasarow Award in Cancer Research (2013). Dr. Scott is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the National Academy of Sciences, and the Institute of Medicine. In 2014 he became the tenth President of the Carnegie Institution for Science.

Allan Spradling (spradling@ciwemb.edu)
Allan Spradling, has been the Director of the Carnegie Institution Department of Embryology since 1994. He is also an HHMI Investigator. Allan Spradling co-developed with Gerry Rubin the first successful method (P element transformation) to insert genes into the Drosophila genome. They won the George W. Beadle Medal of the Genetics Society of America, the Newcomb Cleveland Prize and the Molecular Biology Award of the National Academy of Sciences. Dr. Spradling also won the E.G. Conklin Award of the Society for Developmental Biology and the 2008 Genetics Prize by the Peter and Patricia Gruber Foundation. Dr. Spradling is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He was President of the Genetics Society of America in 2007, having previously served as Treasurer (1987-1989).

William Sullivan (sullivan@biology.ucsc.edu; sullivan8073@icloud.com)
Bill Sullivan is a Professor of Molecular, Cell and Developmental Biology at the University of California – Santa Cruz. He is widely known for his research with Drosophila but has also worked with other model systems including Sciara. Together with his graduate student Brigitte de Saint Phalle, their research using Sciara was featured as cover photos in both Development and the Journal of Cell Biology.
