March 2nd, 2020 | Poetry reading by Marwa Helal, in conversation with Eleni Sikelianos and the Transient Matter: Assemblages of Migration in the Mediterranean exhibition.

Marwa Helal is a poet and journalist. She is the author of Invasive species (Nightboat Books, 2019) and winner of BOMB Magazine’s Biennial 2016 Poetry Contest. She has been awarded fellowships from Poets House, Brooklyn Poets, Cave Canem, and is a Jerome Hill Artist Fellow. Born in Al Mansurah, Egypt, Helal currently lives and teaches in Brooklyn, New York. She received her MFA in creative nonfiction from The New School and her BA in journalism and international studies from Ohio Wesleyan University.

The New Nomadic Age: Archaeologies of Forced and Undocumented Migration

July 15th, 2020 | Conversation with Yannis Hamilakis, hosted by the Columbia Global Centers, Amman.

The New Nomadic Age, edited by Yannis Hamilakis (Joukowsky Family Professor of Archaeology and Professor of Modern Greek Studies, Brown University), is the first archaeological anthology on the topic. The book takes up the challenge and explores the diverse intellectual, methodological, ethical, and political frameworks for an archaeology of forced and undocumented migration in the present. Naor Ben-Yehoyada, Assistant Professor of Anthropology at Columbia University, joins Yannis Hamilakis in discussing this groundbreaking work.
