We warmly invite you to join us for Topographies of Dance — Ancient and Modern, to be held at Brown University on May 5 and 6, 2023. This interdisciplinary conference brings together scholars of the ancient Mediterranean and the Americas to explore the relationship between dance and place, as manifested in a range of time periods, regions, and cultural contexts.
· Why do people dance in the places where they do?
· How do the places where they dance impact or inform their movements?
· How do performers, in turn, transform places by dancing?
· What does place add to dance and vice-versa?
· How do dancers engage with historical and mythical spaces?
In addition to a set of talks and responses, the conference will feature a presentation and reception to celebrate the opening of When Women Fly: Voladoras in Cuetzalan del Progreso, Mexico, an exhibition of photographs by Valeria Luongo.
