The 2024 Joukowsky Institute Spring Conference:
From the Cradle to the Grave:
The Life Course Approach in Archaeology
Organized by Rachel Kalisher (Brown University) and Candace Rice (Brown University)
There are universals to the human experience: all of us are born, and all of us die. Between those bookends, the diversity of human nature means that how each person experiences these milestones is unique. To truly approach reconstruction of past lives, we must weave together the many evidential threads that constitute the archaeological record.
The life course framework acknowledges the intertwined influence of biological, social, and structural factors that accumulate over time and extend influence beyond childhood. For (bio)archaeologists, this means examining aspects of one’s life through the context of their death. This conference unites researchers who use the life course approach to examine the full spectrum of past lives through innovative methods that combine advancements in scientific methodology and refined theoretical approaches.
The Joukowsky Institute for Archaeology and the Ancient World will hold a conference organized by Rachel Kalisher (Brown University) and Candace Rice (Brown University) on these themes on April 5th-6th, 2024, at Rhode Island Hall.
