The Archaeology of College Hill excavations are conducted in concert with a course taught each Fall semester at Brown University: ARCH 1900 The Archaeology of College Hill. The class is intended for upper-level undergraduates with some previous knowledge of archaeological theory or methodology. ARCH 1900 is taught by professional archaeologists, opening students’ eyes to the practices of archaeology in the field, lab, and relevant theory and texts.
A parallel goal for the course, and for the excavations, is to strengthen the ties between Brown and our Providence community. The course emphasizes the importance of engaging the community around research questions and local knowledge. And the excavations’ approach likewise prioritizes outreach to local organizations, schools, families, and other community members to facilitate open exchanges of research questions, findings, and history.
