Source Injection and Mass Fit Validation

We use source injection to test the ability of weak lensing measurements, in order to accurately recover the mass of nearby (z < 0.1) galaxy clusters. We’re aiming to address biases/uncertainties down to the percent-level in shears. We use ray-tracing to simulate the lensing of background galaxies and inject these synthetic, lensed galaxies into coadded images from the Local Volume Complete Cluster Survey (LoVoCCS). By comparing the injected galaxies to the observed data, we can calibrate our shear measurements and refine mass estimates of the dark matter halos. We will present our methodology for source injection, showing how this approach helps us estimate errors in weak lensing mass maps of galaxy clusters.
