The Integrated Laboratory for Archaeological Sciences (ILAS) houses a Leica DM750P polarizing light microscope used for petrographic analysis of various archaeological materials, including pottery, lithics, mortar, and soil sediments.
Equipped with an Analyze/Bertrand Lens, Lambda 530nm (full-wave) plate, a rotating stage, and a mechanical point counting stage, researchers can use ILAS’ microscope to analyze thin sections and characterize the mineralogical and textural composition of artifacts.
ILAS’ petrographic microscope also includes a Leica Flexcam i5 camera and the Enersight software, perfect for microphotographs. With these tools, researchers can interpret past production practices, social interactions, and the provenance and movement of materials.
