Summer 2023 info

Program timeline:

-Orientation day Friday, June 30, 2023

-Programing runs July 10-July 15 from 8am-4pm (expect for the final day trip to Martha’s Vineyard which begins earlier and ends later due to the Ferry trip)

-Reunion day in October


Sample daily flow:

8am: Arrive at Center, breakfast is served, team building activity

8:30am: Students participate in daily 50 min lesson activity of varying topics

9:30am: Students board bus for daily field trip (lunch, snacks, and drinks included)

10am-3pm Students take part in various activities that change each day depending on location

4pm: Bus returns students to Center for pick up

Program Includes:

Free daily Breakfast, lunch, snacks & drinks

Free transportation & admission to various field trips

Future project and leadership opportunities

Student eligibility and requirements :

-Student must be a Rhode Island (public or charter) high school student in grades 10-12

-An interest in or love of history & social justice

-Students must commit to attend and be punctual for the 6 days of the program unless unwell.

-Students are responsible for communicating with Center if they are not able to participate at any point during the program

-Accepted students are responsible for arranging their own transportation to and from the Center ( 94 Waterman St Providence)

-Accepted students must attend a half-day orientation on June 30th before the start of the program

2023 Welcome Letter:

Congrats! You have been accepted to Simmons Center Black & Indigenous Summer Institute for summer 2023!  The co-facilitators and I loved getting to know you through your thoughtful application answers and we are all excited to meet and build with you in July!

Next steps:
 
1. Reply to this email within a week (just to say hi and confirm) so that we know you still plan on attending the summer institute
2. Fill out the required student paperwork (4 forms): Feel free to email me back completed paperwork if you able to download, print, fill out and scan. If you are not able to due to any reason, you will have the opportunity to fill out all required paperwork in person on orientation day.
3. Attend the required orientation day Friday June 30th from 10am-12:30pm at the Center located at 94 Waterman Street in Providence (yellow house) Parents/guardians are required to attend but they do not need to stay for the entire time, just long enough to fill out/hand in the required paperwork & meet the co-facilitators.

10:00am-10:30am: Paperwork support & answering questions
10:30am-11:00am: Icebreaker (getting to know you) activity
11:00am-12:00pm: Direct Action Training workshop
12:00pm-12:30pm: Lunch!
