We are proud to present a conversation and interactive workshop with alumni Jenny Li ’14 (Tooth and Nail Collective) and Chef Gabriela Alvarez ’11 (Liberation Cuisine). The workshop will address issues of building sustained community power and knowledge around food, focusing on accessible and communal practices for U-FLi students. Chef Gabriela Alvarez, based in NYC, works to bring healthy food options into urban communities and provides accessible and healthy cuisine for social justice organizations. Jenny Li, based locally, works in a farming collective that aims to reclaim ancestral knowledge of the land in order to use food sources as a method of healing. Together, they will discuss what it means to harness the social and cultural capital of community power and knowledge of food for working class people. Students will leave the event with personalized herbal tea blends and dining hall inspired food recipes.

Join us for a workshop titled “The Deadly Superhero Complex- How to Get the U.S. to Stop ‘Saving’ Us” followed by a keynote with Vanessa Flores-Maldonado`14.

Vanessa (she/her) is a Guatemalan American woman, born and raised in Los Angeles before moving out to Providence. Vanessa is the first in her family to do a lot of things: graduate high school, go to college, and come out as queer. She first became involved with the Providence Youth Student Movement (PrYSM) as a part of the queer trans programming before she was hired to coordinate the Community Safety Act Campaign. January 2020 marks a significant time for Vanessa as she transitions to become PrYSM’s Co-Executive Director with Steven Dy as her other half.

Join the U-FLi Center and LGBTQ Center for an evening with Loose Accents. Our guests, Danyeli and Undocubae, will discuss the different ways in which they navigate Latinidad on the East and West coast, considering how immigration status, sexuality, race, and class shape their experiences. Danyeli, originally from The Bronx, is a a formerly undocumented, Afro-Dominican writer, podcaster, and activist. Undocubae, from South Central LA is an organizer, storyteller, transformational coal, TEDx speaker and presenter. Together they exemplify what building friendship, support networks, and community across different identities means, and how we can continue to bridge gaps during tumultuous times.

Join the U-FLi Center as we welcome lead organizers from PrYSM and AMOR in this call-to-action workshop where we’ll learn how to get involved in local efforts to combat state sponsored violence!

A part of the Northeast Pardons Campaign, Providence Youth Student Movement is preparing for the historic launch of a state-wide deportation pardons campaign in March 2020. As home to the US’s largest percentage of Southeast Asians (Cambodian, Vietnamese, Laotian, and Hmong), Rhode Island residents have been disproportionately targeted for deportation in the past few years.

Launched in 2016, the Alliance to Mobilize Our Resistance (AMOR) is an alliance of community based grassroots organizations mobilizing and organizing rapid responses to individual and state sponsored violence. AMOR’s work is done collectively through their community teams in areas of immigration, mental health, community response, language justice, and transportation. Recently, AMOR has led local organizing against ICE, through coordinating high profile actions at Wyatt and Bristol immigration detention centers.

Please join this call-to-action workshop to learn concrete ways of getting involved via: fundraising, social media and design, law and policy research, and in-person advocacy.

First Gens@Brown, Project LETS, and the U-FLI Center will be hosting a Fifth Floor takeover as part of National First-Generation Student Day where we’ll collectively explore what it means to thrive as U-FLI & neurodivergent students. Join us as we facilitate a conversation over lunch with current undergraduate students and Peer Mental Health Advocates (PMHAs) about what thriving looks like for them and their communities. Directly following the panel, we will have self-care stations where students can begin practicing healing as a form of thriving.

CareerLab has invited MissBeHelpful (Yanely Espinal, Class of 2011) for an evening conversation on finances. Yanely was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York and is one of the first in her family to graduate college. After two decades of school, she still can’t believe that she never had a class about making smart money decisions! Now, she’s on a mission to help young people learn financial literacy in a fun and engaging way!

After completing Teach For America, Yanely paired her love for teaching with her passion for financial literacy, creating a unique YouTube channel for people to engage with topics like students loans, credit cards, budgeting, investing and saving for retirement. The U-FLi Center is happy to host an informal lunch with students hoping to connect with Yanely.
