What do we mean by “community?”

The community digital health project is grounded in Africana/Black Studies, Black feminist thought and a framework of community as collective action and resolve found in the rich health heritage in Black communities across the city of Providence.

How do we understand and use the word “Black?”

The BHHD lab understands “Black” as an empowering political and cultural category of identity that people of African descent have crafted to supersede the initial conceptualization of Blackness as inferior and the antithesis of whiteness, a privileged racial marker. Our work in the Providence community  reflects individuals who both self-identify and are described as African American/Black and persons of African descent.

Why focus on Black communities?

Black communities’ struggles and concerns with access to quality health care is integral to understanding the larger quest for health equity for all people.
