Dr. Sylvia Carey-Butler has served as the Vice President of Institutional Equity and Diversity at Brown since July 2021. She previously was the Vice President of Diversity and Inclusion and Chief Diversity Officer at Kennesaw State University. At Brown, she is charged with creating an environment where faculty, staff and students can thrive. An experienced executive administrator with 40 years in higher education and nonprofit organizations, she is a passionate advocate of student and institutional success. She was named one of the most influential African Americans in Wisconsin in 2019. One of the Top 35 Women in Higher Education in 2020 and in 2021, she was named one of the top 100 Diversity Offices in the country. She received an Honorary Doctorate from the State University of New York in 2014, just to name a few awards. She earned her B.A. from the State University of New York at Oneonta, an M.A. Social Science with an emphasis in Counseling from Binghamton University, and a Ph.D. in Higher Education Administration and Policy from Vanderbilt University.
