Music Capstone Project:
- Polyrhythmic Loop Machine
My project consists of a Max MSP patch and an external controller. The instrument records three different incoming signals, in this case a guitar, and loops a short portion of each. One loop sets the master tempo and number of beats, and the tempos of the other two loops are calculated such that a different number of beats occurs in the same time span, generating in one relatively simple case a 3 against 4 pattern. These patterns become more complex with the option to sound only select beats, creating a sense of randomness out of order. The physical controller has a button to record a sample, a toggle to select which loop to record over, and a knob for tempo.
