My thesis is a compositional project for solo piano, aiming to explore the idea of philosophical music. The composition consists of four pieces with each one associated with a heuristic and poetic pre-compositional text dealing with philosophies of time. The topics of the texts range from Greek mythology to Nietzsche, all attempting to reveal the profound relation between time and being. These pieces illustrates different approaches towards “text painting” through structures of musical forms, harmonies, musical quotations, and cryptograms. Music is an expressive art, but it lacks clarity when referring to certain objects in the physical world. On the other hand, while language is able to describe objects with less ambiguity, it is essentially poor in emotional intensity and imagination. Thus, only through the fusion of language and music can one create the true philosophical music.
