Music Capstone Project:

The Piano at Home Through the Lens of Early Twentieth-Century American Music

My capstone is inspired by the type of musician I want to be. As a pianist, my favorite thing to do is play spontaneously at people’s homes, whether it’s sight-reading the sheet music they have on hand or playing something I know from memory. I have valued this form of a social gathering as a legitimate cultural phenomenon and have preferred it over the formalized concert venue. Over the last three years, I’ve been working to develop a vast repertoire of American piano music, particularly focusing on works by George Gershwin and Scott Joplin. In December my capstone presentation will be an informal concert, with some semblance to a home environment, where I will play the American piano music I’ve learned and share my ideas on what it means to be the spontaneous, adaptable, skilled musician I hope to be.

Personal Statement:

I’m a 2022.5er studying Music and Visual Art! I study AMP classical piano at Brown but also enjoy playing violin and blowing on my kazoo. Some other interests in music include composition and improvisation. In my free time I like to make kombucha and ride my bike.

Department Note: Ivana is walking in spring 2022 but will complete her studies in the fall of 2022. She will finalize and present her Capstone Project in Music later this year, and this page may be updated to include new details/media from her project.
