Music Capstone Project:

Space Wave Controller

The Space Wave Controller is an instrument that uses your motion in three dimensional space to digitally create sound. It was created as a capstone project for MUSC2220, Designing and Playing Alternative Controllers. The instrument tracks your position and maps simple parameters to your motion. Moving upwards or down will effect the pitch, moving left or right will effect the tone, and moving backwards and forward will effect the amplitude. Each controller operates independently and each instrument has its own voice. The design has several key influences that guided the functionality of the instrument. One of these influences was an interest in connecting dance to music generation. Being able to turn aesthetic motion into sound is very interesting to me. Additionally, I was heavily inspired by virtual reality. The controllers themselves are greatly based off of controllers for virtual reality consoles. The desire to create sound from motion came from a VR game called Beat Saber.
