Honors in Music Thesis:

NO ONE IS DRIVING, EVERYONE IS RIDING: A text-based experimental vocal work

I used this project to build off my past work with improvisation-based open scores, conditioning the performers’ mindsets more than dictating the sounds themselves. Ben West and I performed two iterations of a duet for vocalist and instrumentalist, combining detailed imaginary landscapes, amplified soft vocal noises, live spectral analysis, and instrumental instructions that treated the vocalist’s output as a component of the score. We explored themes such as attention to bodily control as a compositional variable, the limits imposed and agencies granted by technological mediation, and the role and effects of performer improvisation.
