Music Capstone Project:

Rescoring of Final Fantasy XIV: Heavensward

This project is a rescoring of various scenes from the video game Final Fantasy XIV: Heavensward. Heavensward is the second expansion of Final Fantasy XIV and takes place in the frigid North featuring a fierce war between Man and Dragon. Revered by the game’s community, the music drives the emotional story of hope, hatred, and betrayal. When writing the music for these scenes, I mainly drew inspiration from the game’s composer, Masayoshi Soken, as well as composers of other JRPGS (Japanese Role-Playing Games) such as Nobuo Uematsu and Kenji Ito. While writing this music I made sure that it fit in with the sound effects of the game. Many of the sounds in Final Fantasy XIV are mid to high frequencies. I made sure not to overload the player by leaving room in the music for these frequencies.

Personal Statement:

During my time here at Brown, music had always been the highlight of college. I was able to meet people through orchestra, conducting the chamber orchestra, TAing intro theory, and the other music classes that I took. Even though I won’t be working in music after graduation, I’ll be sure to keep up with composition and performance. I’d like to give a huge thank you to all of the amazing professors I had while studying here at Brown. Arlene, Professor Steinbach, Mark (Seto), Professor Cheung, Professor Nathan, Professor Tan, Melody, and all of the other music professors allow for music to thrive here. Once again, thank you! I’ll be sure to visit!
