Music Capstone Project:
V.I.B.E. (Vocals-Instrumentals-Beats-Electrics)
My senior capstone project was to recreate 3 professionally made songs, any way that I choose, using the knowledge and skills I’ve obtained through my courses at Brown with the requirement that each song has multiple parts. Everything from basic music theory to editing using software programs were all key components to making this project possible and couldn’t have been done without the knowledge I’ve gained through the courses here. This capstone project is also reflective of one of my passions to create music much like an acapella group except using my own voice for all parts. The three artists that I chose were Daniel Caesar, James Arthur, and Boyce Avenue. The pieces I recreated were Japanese Denim, Say You Won’t Let Go, and Hallelujah Chorus accordingly using the recording facilities offered at Brown’s Steinert Hall (includes their studios, microphones, piano’s, and advice from professors [James Moses]), my laptop, phone camera, and voice. Each video took approximately 25 hours of work which included, finding sound files, finding a reasonable pitch, recording of each piece through multiple attempts, video editing, and many other mishaps along the way.
Personal Statement:
Growing up with my Ethiopian-born mother in a city like New Orleans, culture has been a big part of my upbringing. My mother’s life and experiences in her country and in the United States has shown her the importance of good studying habits and a good education. She has instilled in me the love for reading, the desire to be the best that I can be and the aspirations I have for my future. Growing up in a household where grades and education are extremely important has greatly impacted my academic development. It has always been in the forefront of my mind that it is always best to shoot for excellence.
