The 2017 CRMI Cohort included Imani McDaniel, Rosa Medrano, Deyreni Ferreras, Kelley Sellers. In writing about their motivations for taking part in the program, students discussed role models involved in activism for civil rights that they would be interested in studying in greater depth than was possible at their high schools. Particularly, students expressed their interest in better understanding the ability of historic change-makers (ranging from Frederick Douglass to Harvey Milk) to engage in activism while threatened by hate and violence. Students expressed that a deep study of the Civil Rights Movement would allow them to grapple with these questions and others regarding contemporary iterations of racial oppression.
