Investigation of a novel pulse oximeter to mitigate inaccuracies of hypoxic patients with varying skin complexions

This small study (N = 18) was a real-world, prospective clinical trial of pulse oximeter performance in adult, critically-ill patients of different skin pigmentation classes at the Miriam Hospital ICU in Providence, RI, USA.  The study was designed to test in simultaneity, an experimental and medical grade pulse oximeter against the gold-standard, an Arterial Blood Gas (ABG) measurement. We report the bias versus arterial saturation acquired through ABG analysis for two skin classifications using a perception based skin tone assessment.
