The CLANlab has investigated school-based mindfulness training at the university and middle school levels. Both studies investigated the effects of an approach called “Integrative Contemplative Pedagogy” (ICP) which was developed by Brown University Professor Harold Roth, and modified for 6th graders by Jonathan Gold. ICP integrates first-person experiential and third-person didactic approaches, which means that students experientially try out the contemplative practices that they are reading about in class. ICP is primarily a critical, academic discipline, but we have also found that this academic class can have positive mental health benefits for students.
