We welcome proposals drawing from different fields to understand the involvement of people with stone and its significance, from any period and geographical context, around these themes:

 – The moving, trade, and exchange of stone

 – Sensory perception and engagement with stone

 – The reinterpretation of stone through experimental approaches

 – The ritualistic and symbolic meaning of stone

 – The transformation of stone from its sourcing to its final deposition

 – Stone and monumentality

Title of the conference: “Company of images: modelling the ancient Egyptian imaginary world of the Middle Bronze Age (2000-1500 BC)”

The purpose of this conference is to explore the fertile imaginary world of Middle Bronze Age Egypt through its material culture and the archaeological sources from which such material is recovered. One principal focus will be on figurines in their immediate and wider archaeological context. We also aim to explore other objects that have traditionally been interpreted as tools for the protection of mother and child, all as products of an interwoven world.
The conference is an opportunity to explore how the ancient Egyptians populated their imaginary universe, combining different images, materials, and objects – “Company of Images”.
Key points of discussion will be the following:

  • Iconography
  • Find assemblage
  • Materiality and technology
  • Types of context
  • Rituality and conception

The aim of the conference is also to consider related material from other periods that throw light on the subject.
Abstract deadline: 15 May 2014
Please submit abstracts of no more than 250 words for a proposed 15 minute paper with an additional 10-15 minutes allowed for general discussion, along with your name and institution, to companyofimages@gmail.com. For further questions, you may contact Gianluca Miniaci at g.miniaci@gmail.com. The abstracts should contain the title of the paper, the author’s/authors’ name(s) and affiliation. Abstracts will be reviewed by the Organizing Committee, and notification of accepted proposals will be sent out before 15th June 2014.
The proceedings will be published in 2015.
Speakers are not required to pay the conference fee.
The conference is part of the research project EPOCHS – Egyptian Periodisation – Object Categories as Historical Signatures, funded by the European Research Council inside the scheme Marie Curie – Intra European Fellowship. The conference is supported by the European Research Council, University College London, University of Pisa, Italian Ministry of Research, and the Friends of the Petrie Museum.

The Department of Art History and Archaeology invites applications for a full-time, non-tenure track position at the rank of Visiting Assistant or Associate Professor. The appointment is for the 2014-15 academic year. This position involves six courses (3/3), including an introductory survey of Roman art and archaeology and undergraduate and graduate-level Roman courses in a variety of topics. Teaching experience is expected and the PhD is required for appointment at this rank.
Please note that a tenure-track position in this area will be searched next year, to begin August 2016. For both positions we seek a classical archaeologist with broad training in Roman art and archaeology, and an established record of funding, field research, and publication centered in Italy.
The department offers the BA, MA, and PhD degrees in art history and archaeology. There are usually about 80 undergraduate majors and 25 graduate students. Graduate degrees in art history and archaeology can be combined with interdisciplinary minors in Ancient Studies, Medieval and Renaissance Studies, Museum Studies, and Women’s and Gender Studies. The University of Missouri is the main campus of the state university system and offers a broad range of undergraduate and graduate programs. Campus resources include the Museum of Art and Archaeology, with a collection of 16,000 objects, excellent library resources for Roman archaeology, and a Visual Resources Center.

Fieldwork Opportunity: Summer fieldwork opportunities in Cyprus

1. Kissonerga-Skalia Bronze Age Settlement excavation

The settlement of Kissonerga-Skalia, near Paphos, has been under excavation since 2007, and has evidence of occupation from the beginning of the Early Bronze Age (c. 2400 BC) to the start of the Late Bronze Age. We are currently working to expose the architecture and material associated with the final phase complex (dated to Late Cypriot IA, c. 1600 BC). This complex has evidence for industrial activities, including beer production, large exterior walls and probable domestic space.
A small number of places are available and students will need to arrive Sunday 29th June and leave Saturday 26th July (and be prepared to stay for the entire four-week season). The cost will be £500 (GBP) for the season, meals included except on the day  off. You will also need your airfare to Cyprus.

2. Experimental Archaeology and Beer Production

Experimental Archaeology Field School in the village of Kissonerga, Cyprus in August 2014.  Only 10 places are available for the field school. Participants in the Field School will learn experimental archaeology techniques in order to recreate a Bronze Age drying kiln, likely used for beer production at Kissonerga-Skalia, learn how to produce beer using Bronze Age techniques, and learn excavation skills by excavating a (now destroyed) kiln originally constructed in 2012. The Field School is ideal for all levels of archaeology student (or interested others), particularly those with an interest in experimental archaeology or the archaeology of the Mediterranean and Near East, as well as anyone with an interest in the subject or looking to become more involved in learning about archaeology. The Field School will be running from Wednesday 30th July to Wednesday 20th August.  Participation is required for a minimum of 2 weeks but places are available for the full season (3 weeks). College Fellow in the Archaeology of Israel and the Hebrew Bible

The Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations is seeking applications for a College Fellow in the Archaeology of Israel and the Hebrew Bible for the academic year 2014-15. The Fellow will teach three courses over the two semesters of the academic year and have the fourth slot reserved for his or her research. The successful candidate will be able to teach courses that are accessible to both undergraduate and graduate students, and will have scholarly expertise in the archaeology of Israel in the First Temple period (and prior).  Teaching competence in the archaeology of Israel in the Second Temple period and the broader ancient Near Eastern context is also highly desirable. The Fellow may in addition advise and evaluate undergraduate senior theses. Candidates are required to have a Ph.D. or an equivalent terminal degree by the expected start date. The appointment is for one year, with the possibility of renewal for a second year.
