The Department of Classics at the University of California, Berkeley has been authorized to fill a position in Roman culture beginning July 1, 2015, at the level of assistant professor (tenure-track). We seek candidates who specialize in any area of Roman culture, broadly understood,  from the beginnings to Late Antiquity, but whose expertise extends to areas of study beyond language and literature and complements the range of subjects and approaches covered by  current faculty. Potential areas of interest include religion, law, social history, intellectual history, and linguistics. Candidates must be fully competent in Latin and ancient Greek and be  prepared to teach a full range of Latin courses.
Ph.D. or equivalent is required within one year of employment.
Basic qualifications: The minimum qualification required of applicants is that they be in the  process of writing a doctoral dissertation (or the equivalent) at the time of application.  Additional qualifications: Excellent knowledge of Latin and ancient Greek. Demonstrated  excellence or strong promise of excellence in teaching and research in an area of Roman studies as described above. Preferred qualifications: PhD or equivalent by date of appointment.
