The Society of Black Archaeologists is now accepting abstracts for Virtual Symposia for the 2023 Society for Historical Archaeology Conference

The Society of Black Archaeologists is now accepting abstracts for a Virtual Formal Symposia at the 2023 Society for Historical Archaeology Conference. A Formal Symposia consists of four or more papers organized around a central theme. Our theme this year is “Global Black Archaeologies: Mobilizing Critical, Anti-Racist, De/Anti-Colonial, and Black Feminist Archaeologies in Uncertain Times.” Papers may explore a wide variety of topics and themes, including all areas of Africa and the African Diaspora related to the history, present, and future(s) of African and African Diaspora archaeology, both terrestrial and underwater. We specifically encourage papers advancing critical race, anti-racist, anti-caste, de/anti-colonial, Black feminist, and related currents within archaeological theory and practice.

All formal symposium papers are expected to be 15 minutes long and pre-recorded by December 1st, 2022.

Please submit your abstracts to: info@societyofblackarchaeologists.com with the subject line “SHA 2023 Abstract Submission” by July 13, 2022.

Eligibility: SBA membership is required. SHA membership is not required.

Conference Dates/Location: Jan 4-7, 2023; Lisbon, Portugal

New Issue of Journal of Roman Archaeology available on Cambridge Core

The journal will be concerned with Italy and all parts of the Roman world from about 700 B.C. to about A.D. 700. It will exclude the prehistoric period but include the Etruscan period. It is intended to be Mediterranean-wide in its coverage and is not intended to give priority to any particular geographical regions within the Roman world. All aspects of archaeology, by the broadest interpretation of that word, will be relevant for inclusion, including historical material which has an archaeological component or which is likely to be relevant for archaeologists.
