This weekly series brings together local artists, architects, writers, thinkers, musicians at the Center for Public Humanities to discuss their work with the public, every Thursday at 6:30 pm. A short presentation will be followed by Q&A and a convivial gathering in a fairly intimate setting.

This webinar is intended for anyone who has ever considered, or might consider, graduate school. It is free and open to all members of the public. We hope this can be an opportunity for curious individuals or all ages, all levels of experience (or inexperience), and all academic backgrounds to find out more about graduate school in archaeology.

This is an overview of the graduate application process by the faculty members who review applications for Brown University’s doctoral program in Archaeology and the Ancient World. These professors will tell you exactly what they look for in applications, how to write a personal statement, who to ask for letters of recommendation, what courses to take to prepare yourself for graduate school, and what jobs a graduate education in archaeology prepares you for. It’s a rare insider’s view of the process, and the best advice you can get about applying to grad school.

Tess Davis, Executive Director of The Antiquities Coalition, will present AIA Archaeology Hourlectures on Tuesday, November 15 at 7 pm PT (register) and Wednesday, November 16 at 7 pm ET (register) with her talk Blood Antiquities: Tomb Raiders, Art Smugglers, and the Black Market in Cultural Treasures. Tess will talk about cultural heritage sites under threat and who’s driving the destruction–from drug cartels to terrorists lusting after priceless art and antiquities. She’ll also discuss how governments, law enforcement, and regular citizens are combating this cultural racketeering crisis.

Tess will also be back for an Archaeology Abridged talk on The Wild, Wild East: Combating the Black Market in Ancient Asian Art on Thursday, November 17 at 2 pm ET (register) where she’ll talk about tomb raiders and art smugglers that are actively targeting the rich cultural heritage of Asia and selling it on the American art market.

The 100th anniversary of the discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb is a good time for a revaluation of the boy-king. This lecture surveys recent research on Tutankhamun and presents a picture of him, not as a fragile pharaoh who walked on the side of his foot, but rather as possibly a teenaged warrior. This slide lecture also discusses the claim that Carter stole objects from the tomb. Using previously unpublished letters, we suggest that more objects were taken than was previously believed.
