On Saturday, September 27th, a special WaterFire event will mark the
200th Anniversary of the abolition of the Transatlantic slave trade,
and launch the Rhode Island Council for the Humanities’ Freedom
Festival. The event is dedicated to the memory and work of Professor
Rhett S. Jones.

The event will include actors, dancers, torchbearers, a libation with
1000 people. It’s going to be a significant and moving event to be a
part of. You can read more about it at www.TheMuseumOnline.com
To make it happen, we are going to need lots of volunteers. Please
email us at lyra@TheMuseumOnline.com, and let us know whether you’re
available from 2-6pm or from 6-10pm (or both!). Among the roles are
that of torchbearer; if you are comfortable with the idea of holding a
flaming torch, please let us know. If not, don’t worry – there are
many other roles.
All torchbearers will be given full training, including safety
training. Most volunteers by far will be required at various stages
between 6pm and 10pm. You not be required for the entire time, but
will need you to be prompt and dressed appropriately, in black
t-shirt/sweater and black pants (100% cotton jeans if you’ll be a
torchbearer). Please send any questions to lyra@TheMuseumOnline.com
or call 401-261-3441.
It’s going to be a magical and important event. Thanks for helping
make it happen.
