Research Fellowships in Rome, Italy

The Lemmermann Foundation awards a limited number of fellowships to master’s students and doctoral candidates in order to support their cost of research in the classical studies and humanities. Topic of research must be related to Rome and the Roman culture of any period, from the Pre-Roman period to the present day time.
Applicants must provide evidence for their need to study and carry out research in Rome, Italy.

Eligible applicants must:
– be enrolled in a recognized University program
– have a basic knowledge of the Italian language
– be 35 years of age or younger at application deadline

Humans Against Poor Scholarship, in partnership with ASOR, is offering grants of $1,000 to Black undergraduate students in their junior or senior year of study, in order to help cover the costs of attending the ASOR annual meeting (Chicago, November 17th-20th 2021). Two grants of $1,000 are available (one provided from H.A.P.S. funds, and one matched by ASOR). In addition, thanks to a generous partnership with ASOR, one year’s conference registration, and a two-year student membership to ASOR will also be awarded to the two successful applicants.

To help students navigate what can be a deeply daunting experience, successful applicants will also be paired with Ph.D. students or early career scholars who will act as a mentor during the conference. This grant not only provides financial aid for conference attendance, but gives Black students the opportunity to start forming professional networks that are so crucial for developing an academic career.

ARIT Summer Fellowships for Advanced Turkish Language in Istanbul offers intensive advanced study of Turkish online through Bogazici University during summer 2021. The ARIT BU fellowship will support participation in the online BU program together with supplemental learning activities carried out in Istanbul.

Applicants must have two years of Turkish language study or the equivalent.

THE FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM:  For summer 2021, the American Research Institute in Turkey will offer fellowships for advanced participants in the summer program in intensive advanced Turkish language at Boğaziçi University* in Istanbul. The program offers on-line instruction for summer 2021. 

Due to the uncertainties caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, full details about funding and program plans for the Summer of 2021 are not yet available.  We appreciate your patience as we navigate through this changing context.

PREDEPARTURE ACTIVITIES: Participation in the program includes 6 hours of preparation prior to departure for Turkey, most of which will be on-line orientation activities.

COURSE OF STUDY: Participation in the program includes 80 hours of instruction during the summer. Courses supported by the ARIT fellowship are offered at the advanced level.  Class size is limited to ten students.  Classes are conducted in Turkish, with informal and formal styles introduced and reviewed through instruction, online exercises, and open conversations with teaching assistants.  Weekly lectures are given on various aspects of the Turkish culture ranging from economics, history, literature, fine arts, architecture and others by scholars specialized in their fields on Thursdays. Weekly Turkish film sessions are scheduled for Mondays.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:  Full-time students and scholars affiliated at academic institutions are eligible to apply. To be a fellowship applicant, you must:

1. Be a citizen, national, or permanent resident of the United States
2. Be currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate level academic program, or be faculty
3. Have a minimum B average in current program of study; and
4. Perform at the high-intermediate level on a proficiency-based admissions examination

The American Research Institute in Turkey (ARIT) is pleased to announce 2021-2022 fellowship programs for students and scholars based in the U.S. and Canada: 

ARIT / National Endowment for the Humanities Advanced Fellowships for Research in Turkey cover all fields of the humanities, including prehistory, history, art, archaeology, literature, and linguistics as well as interdisciplinary aspects of cultural history.  The fellowships support applicants who have completed their academic training.  The terms may range from four months to a full year.  Stipend per month is $4,200.

ARIT Fellowships for Research in Turkey are offered for research in ancient, medieval, or modern times, in any field of the humanities and social sciences.  Post-doctoral and advanced doctoral fellowships (PhD candidate) may be held for various terms, from one month up to one academic year.  Stipends range from $2,500 to $15,500.

Applications for ARIT and ARIT NEH fellowships must be submitted to ARIT by November 1, 2020.  The fellowship committee will notify applicants in late January 2021.

The Archaeological Institute of America offers a range of funding opportunities, including fellowships, publication grants, and field school scholarships—plus the Site Preservation grant, and grants for excavation, survey work, and research.  Attached are flyers listing these, and further information can be found on the AIA’s website at https://www.archaeological.org/programs/professionals/grants-awards/.  We know that many scholars’ projects had to be deferred this past year, and hope that our funding programs will be useful going forward.  Please note there are fall deadlines coming up for many of the programs.

Announcing the 7th Grant Cycle for the NSF Archaeometry and Archaeology Program, SPARC (SPatial Archaeometry Research Collaborations)

We are pleased to announce the 2020-2021 application season for the SPARC  (SPatial Archaeometry Research Collaborations) Program. Please circulate this email widely among your archaeology and paleoanthropology faculty, graduate students, or other colleagues who may be interested.

SPARC (SPatial Archaeometry Research Collaborations) is an NSF-funded Archaeology and Archaeometry program dedicated to promoting geospatial research in archaeology, hosted by the Center for Advanced Spatial Technologies at the University of Arkansas, Dartmouth College, and University of Glasgow. Now in its 7th year, SPARC offers direct support to archaeological projects through awards in three categories:

• Fieldwork: On-site data collection
• Data & Analytics: Preparation, processing and analysis of geospatial data
• Publication: Presentation, publication and archiving of complex geospatial datasets

For this solicitation, we will be prioritizing Data & Analytics and Publications proposals due to uncertainties related to the COVID-19 pandemic, and those which align with our analytical development priorities such as microCT and imagery analysis (see the https://sparc.cast.uark.edu/ homepage for full list). However, we will consider other projects on a case-by-case basis.

We particularly encourage applications from scholars underrepresented within the field of archaeology, early-career scholars, and those working in the public sector or at public institutions. Late-stage PhD students are eligible for SPARC submissions. The Program sets no priorities based on time period, geographic region or specific research topic, but projects should have an anthropologically relevant focus and qualify for NSF archaeology funding.

Spalter Teaching Fellowships
Fall 2020-Spring 2022
Spalter Teaching Fellows are trained as RISD Museum educators and are responsible for teaching and working with children and youth ages 5 to 18. They undergo rigorous training with the Museum’s educators, who introduce them to the Museum’s collection and pedagogy. Fellows support learning from original works of art and the development of critical thinking, problem solving, and creative interpretation.
The Spalter Teaching Fellowship is open to RISD and Brown graduate and undergraduate students from all disciplinary backgrounds. Spalter Teaching Fellows receive $5000 per academic year and must commit to a two-year fellowship, serving up to eight hours per week. Applications due February 21.

The Joan Hall and Mark Weil Conservation Fund Fellowship
Fall 2020-Spring 2022
The Hall/Weil Fellow will receive professional conservation training from the museum’s Objects Conservator to introduce them to the collections care and preventive conservation activities relating to the museum’s permanent collection. The Fellow will assist the conservator, supporting both the short-term and long-term care of original works of art.The Joan Hall and Mark Weil Conservation Fund Fellowship is open to undergraduate students from all disciplinary backgrounds. The Hall/Weil Fellow will receive $10.90 per hour and must commit to a two-year fellowship, serving six hours per week during the fall and spring semesters.

for RESEARCH in ROME (Italy)

The Lemmermann Foundation awards a limited number of fellowships to master’s students and doctoral candidates in order to support their cost of research in the classical studies and humanities. Fields of study include but are not limited to Archaeology, History, History of Art, Italian, Latin, Musicology, Philosophy, and Philology. Applicants must provide evidence for their need to study and carry out research in Rome. Topic of research must be related to Rome or the Roman culture from the Pre-Roman period to the present day.

2. have a basic knowledge of the Italian language;
3. be born after March 31st, 1984.
