Position Announcement | Assistant or Associate Professor in Latin Literature or Roman Archaeology

Job Description

The Department of Ancient Greek and Roman Studies (formerly Classics) at the University of California, Berkeley seeks to appoint an Assistant Professor (tenure track) or Associate Professor (tenured) in Roman Studies. The Department seeks a scholar with a specialization in either Latin Literature or Roman Art/Archaeology whose expertise complements the range of subjects and approaches covered by current faculty. Duties will include developing and teaching graduate and undergraduate courses, supervising and mentoring graduate degree candidates, contributing as a dissertation committee member or as dissertation advisor, and participating in the administrative activities and intellectual life of the Department and the University. The Department has a strong undergraduate and graduate program and offers many opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration with faculty in the department and beyond. Salary range: The current salary range for Assistant Professors is $78,200 – $123,400 (9-month academic year salary). The current salary range for Associate Professors is $96,500 – $143,600 (9-month academic year salary), however, off-scale salary and other components of pay, which would yield compensation that is higher than this range, are offered to meet competitive conditions.

Journal of Roman Archaeology Highlights

The Journal of Roman Archaeology (JRA) marks AIASCS 2024 in Chicago this week with free-access research articles included in the Cambridge Archaeology Journals collection. Access (where not already OA) is granted across the conference and throughout January.

Field School Opportunity: Excavate in Greece’s Roman Archaeology and Bioarchaeology Field School

The program Excavate in Greece is hosting a field school in Roman Archaeology and Bioarchaeology this summer in Nikopoli, Greece. Nikopoli is a renowned site being excavated by the Greek Ministry of Culture in preparation for inclusion in te UNESCO list of cultural heritage. They offer two weeks of excavation, followed by one week of Bioarchaeology in the lab at the Museum. The project is unique in Greece in offering this combination. All participants receive an official certificate of 150h, signed by the Greek authorities. They also offer credit.

They welcome applications from students of all levels, enrolled or graduated from Archaeology or an allied discipline course.
