Stem cell spheroids undergo chondrogenesis in arrayed format

The Darling Lab article “Chondrogenesis of Adipose-Derived Stem Cells Using an Arrayed Spheroid Format” was accepted for publication in Cellular and Molecular Bioengineering. This study demonstrated that mesenchymal stem cellsCMBE, 9-2022 cultured as 3D spheroids in a highly arrayed format could undergo the process of chondrogenic differentiation at 500 or even 50 cells/spheroid. Samples with 5,000 cells/spheroid exhibited similar characteristic changes as gold standard 250,000-cell micromasses. This methodology opens up the possibility for large-scale screening of molecules/toxins for their effects on stem cell-driven cartilage formation and healing. Congratulations to lead author Robert Gutierrez!
