During the Doctoral Education Committee‘s meetings with the graduate student body on February 13 and 27, comments and suggestions were solicited from GSC representatives and the community as a whole. In order to facilitate this conversation about the goals of doctoral education at Brown, at its March meeting, the GSC passed a resolution regarding the Doctoral Education Committee’s charge to develop mechanisms for the standardized evaluation of doctoral programs. In order to reiterate perspectives and concerns that have been raised in meetings (Feb. 6, 27) between the Doctoral Education Committee and the student body of doctoral candidates with respect to the use of standardized departmental evaluations, we would like to officially make the following recommendations to the committee as it nears the end of its process. This document has a limited scope: it is meant only to address the use of standardized evaluations, and to argue that such evaluations should not be used to apportion any cuts to doctoral programs.
