Saturday, May 18th, noon to 4pm in the Graduate Lounge.
Moving in May? Getting rid of stuff? Do you really need a toaster, an area rug, or some kitchen supplies?
Come to the Bring-the-GSBB-to-Life Swap and Charity Drive!

This event is dependent on you! so bring anything you would like to sell, swap or donate to the Graduate Lounge on Saturday, May 18 between noon and 2pm. The more stuff people bring, the better it will be! This is basically a live version of what happens on the GSBB listserv every spring and fall here at Brown, it just gives us a chance to get a lot of it all done in one afternoon!
Besides household items, feel free to bring (clean) clothing that you are looking to swap or donate. This gives us all a good reason to go through those closets and pick out the things you know you never are going to wear again. Remember, one person’s last season’s sandals are another person’s new summer fashion!
Be sure to get there early if you are selling and swapping goods!
All charity items will be donated to Savers in Providence after the event.
We will even provide coffee and cookies to keep your energy levels up during your rummaging adventures 🙂
Hope to see you (and your stuff) there!

Are you…
- A Master’s student continuing your studies into the next academic year?
- Available throughout the summer, and particularly in Providence during the last week or so of August?
- Keen to work with GSC and the Graduate School to help give new Brown Master’s students a better orientation experience as they begin their studies?
If you’ve answered yes to all of the above, we want to hear from you!
The GSC Executive Board is seeking to appoint an interim Master’s Advocate, to cover the period between the graduation of the existing postholder and the election of the next officer at the September GSC.
The Master’s Advocate position is an essential element of the GSC leadership, and this summer post in particular offers the chance to have a direct impact on the experience of new Master’s students on their arrival this fall.
The term of office will be June 1 – September 6 (the postholder will then be eligible to run for election for the Fall Semester, if desired). Duties will be light for most of the summer, but the postholder will need to be in Providence for the last week of August, and ideally from August 21 onwards. Presence at the International Orientation on August 23 and the Graduate School orientation on August 30 are essential.
If you wish to be considered for this position, please email GSC President Matt Lyddon by 5pm on Thursday, May 23, identifying your program, your summer availability, and any relevant organizational/advocacy experience.

During the Doctoral Education Committee‘s meetings with the graduate student body on February 13 and 27, comments and suggestions were solicited from GSC representatives and the community as a whole. In order to facilitate this conversation about the goals of doctoral education at Brown, at its March meeting, the GSC passed a resolution regarding the Doctoral Education Committee’s charge to develop mechanisms for the standardized evaluation of doctoral programs. The first paragraph of that document follows. Please contact gsc_secretary@brown.edu with any questions.
——-
In order to reiterate perspectives and concerns that have been raised in meetings (Feb. 6, 27) between the Doctoral Education Committee and the student body of doctoral candidates with respect to the use of standardized departmental evaluations, we would like to officially make the following recommendations to the committee as it nears the end of its process. This document has a limited scope: it is meant only to address the use of standardized evaluations, and to argue that such evaluations should not be used to apportion any cuts to doctoral programs.
