Hi folks,
We’ve spent some time today cleaning up the navigation links and menus to streamline the site and make information easier to find.
On your left, you’ll now find three master navigation links, into which pretty much everything on the website has been sorted:
Here you’ll find information on GSC Classes, Group Recognition, the GSCEvents Calendar, and a feed on upcoming Social Events from the GSC’s new blog.
Everything you’d ever want or need to know about the GSC and how it works, including the list of voting reps, executive officers, committee members, the Constitution and By Laws, a list of GSC’s social media feeds, and contact information.
Here you’ll find details of Funding Opportunities offered by the GSC, Grad student spaces on the Brown campus (including the GCB and Graduate Lounge), and a host of Services and Information links (including Legal Advice, Grad Email Listservs and the Grad Wiki).
And there’s more…
As if all the above wasn’t enough, we’ve also preserved a number of links to popular pages and external sources of information, all of which can still be accessed from the homepage.
We hope this makes our website easier to use and helps you to find the information you need faster. If you have any suggestions or comments, please get in touch with John Mulligan, the GSC Secretary and Communications Director.
Happy Browsing!

Attention, Master’s students!

The GSC currently has an opening for the post of Master’s Advocate.
Job description:
As the liaison between the GSC and the master’s programs of Brown University, the Master’s Advocate helps bridge the worlds of master’s students and PhD students. His or her main duty is to add the perspectives of master’s students to the GSC. This work primarily involves gathering and assessing the opinions of master’s students on graduate student issues and sharing the results at GSC meetings and at meetings with the Administration.
The position will be elected at the next GSC general meeting, to be held at7pm, on Wednesday, Feb. 6. (Google Calendar event)
Nominations can be made at the meeting itself, but if you would like to put your name in for consideration, or if you simply want to know more about the position, email me at gsc_secretary@brown.edu.
Happy January!

In accordance with Article II, Section 2 of the GSC Constitution and Article I, Section 5 of the GSC By Laws, the following changes to the number of departmental GSC Voting Reps will take effect at the February 2013 GSCmeeting. This annual adjustment occurs a result of updated student count information provided annually to the GSC Secretary by the Graduate School.
Adjustments to Representation:
- Biomed Division – Public Health: increase of 1 rep (to 3)
- Biomed Division – Pathobiology: decrease of 1 rep (to 1)
- English: decrease of 1 rep (to 1)
- Political Science: increase of 1 rep (to 2)
- Public Policy and American Institutions (Taubman Center):decrease of 1 rep (to 1)
Discontinued Representation:
- Marine Bio Lab in Bio-Med: representation discontinued (previously 1 rep)
Reason: MBL is no longer counted as a separate unit in the student count (while its grads are shown to be drawn from other units on the MBLwebsite). Therefore MBL no longer qualifies for separate representation (a reduction from 1 legacy slot).
Creation of New Representation:
- Biomed Division – Biomedical Engineering: new representation created (1 rep)
Reason: Graduate School student count return shows a count of 39 graduate students in Biomedical Engineering split across Bio-Med (26) and Engineering (13) Divisions. These students have not been represented by the prior GSC allocations.
Note: where departments have seen their representative slots reduced, outgoing reps are still welcome to attend GSC general meetings as alternates for the remaining voting reps in their department, or in their capacity as members of the graduate student body.

The GSC is currently looking for a tech officer!
Do you like computers and graduate students? Do you think that graduate students can be better friends with each other through the help of computers?
Then the communications committee agrees with you wholeheartedly.

A platform of power.
The tech officer is a member of the executive committee, and works with the communications team and the GSC secretary (me!) to keep the technical side of things (like the website and listserves) in good working order.
But this job is as big or as small as you want it to be:
~If you think we need to rebuild something, we want to hear it, and we will help you!
~If you simply have an irrepressible streak of civic virtue and want to help on a more limited basis, we still want your help, and will help you. 🙂
The job description can be found here, but if you have any questions about it, please email me at gsc_secretary@brown.edu.
Best,
John Mulligan, GSC Secretary
